Introductory Profile: About Kimberly Upchurch

My interviewee’s name is Kimberly Upchurch. She has two children, grades 9 and 6. The older of the children has Cerebral Palsy, which is a group of disorders that involves brain and nervous system functions, such as movement, learning, seeing, hearing, and thinking. Due to having Cerebral Palsy, she uses a wheelchair. I have known Ms. Upchurch and her family for a long time, as we went to the same church and were involved in many of the church activities together.

Mrs. Upchurch is an average sized woman, with blonde hair and green/blue eyes. Her home is very neat and welcoming. She is a very nice person, and makes sure to put everyone’s needs before her own. She is very involved with her church and faith. Ms. Upchurch lives with her 2 daughters, husband, and dog. Before having children, she worked as a teacher. While growing up, her mother worked as an occupational therapist at a Cerebral Palsy center, so she would help out there occasionally.

The overall feel of the interview was very relaxed, but at the beginning it was somewhat awkward, as most of my previous conversations with Mrs. Upchurch have been very friendly, and relaxed. But after “breaking the ice” the conversation flowed as any normal conversation would. Mrs. Upchurch talked in a very calm, sweet voice, and tried her hardest to answer each question to the best of her abilities. She provided very intelligent, thought-out answers, and was very open about answering every question.

My interview with Ms. Upchurch went very well. It was relaxed, thoughtful, and enjoyable. The interview was also a way for our families to catch up with each other, as we have not had much time to see each other with everyone having such busy schedules.
