"Well, most of the hospitals here in Austin are Catholic, so they wouldn't condone a single woman having a child out of wedlock."

Introductory Profile: About Melissa Walker

Melissa Walker was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. Later in life, she moved to Austin and has worked in the industry since she arrived. She has identified herself as a lesbian woman for 30+ years. She went to the State University of New York College at Potsdam, and there she majored in Chemistry and Philosophy. I met Walker through my parents, who are good friends with her.

During the interview, the main highlight is our discussion of the struggles she has encountered as a lesbian woman. She describes the time she has felt oppressed by large organizations and some of the people around her. We also covered a variety of other topics, including government involvement in marriage, religious setbacks, affirmative action, and the struggles she thinks her particular group faces.
