Aly Winningham

As Interviewed by Ori Green, March 9, 2013
"I had to fight a lot of that growing up, and I had my share of confrontations and assaults. Iíve seen it all, and now Iím in my mid 40s. Iím a little bit more laid-back and choose to take a more passive approach, like voting or being the person that I want to be."

Introductory Profile: About Aly Winningham

Aly Winningham was my interviewee on the topic of gay rights. Politics, and how it has an effect on ones beliefs and rights, was one of the main things covered in this interview. We also covered the changes in gay marriage rights and how these things are changing exponentially. Now, almost a fifth of the American states have legalized gay marriage, and different places reflect differently on these beliefs.

Aly was born on November 7, 1968. She grew up during a very homophobic time in Houston, Texas. As a child, Aly was enrolled in a fine arts private school where she could express her artistic desire. At 17. she attended into a public high school. In this high school, she faced many challenges, including bullying, due to her sexuality. Simple things like walking in the hallway became issues.

After she left high school, Aly had used her artistic talents to her advantage. She was experimenting with different styles and perspectives until she found mosaics. Later in her life, when she moved to East Austin, Aly opened Terra Firma Studios: a home-run art studio where she produced unique mosaic artwork.

Terra Firma is still running outside of Austin. Aly continues to produce one-of-a-kind pieces. She has also gotten many jobs in public places, such as the ďCandy IslandĒ at the Whole Foods in downtown Austin, or the many installations at the Domain in North Austin.
