"I did not realize the impact he was having, you know and I didn't know that was happening. I was just, I didn't know what was going on."

Introductory Profile: Mary Allaway: UT tower shooting

Mary Allaway a graduate of the University of Texas, was at the university when the Tower shooting happened. She was a student being introduced to the school, so she wasn't even a freshman at the time. The Tower shooting happened August 1, 1966. A man Charles Whitman got on top of the Tower with a rifles and began to shoot upon the campus. He did this to kill his wife and daughter.
Mary was in BATTS auditorium a big building near the tower. Mary was being introduced to the program at the time, basically shadowing at UT when this happened, her introductory group was held roughly five minutes late, this stopped hundreds of pre-freshman people from being on the drag on on campus when this was happening. The shooting went from 11:48 a.m. 1:24 p.m killing 17 and injuring 31, shooting a collective of 48. The attack lasted 96 minutes start to finish and in the end Charles Whitman was killed by a police officer.
This was the first of a new era, this was the first school shooting to occur. Now it is common (too common) for schools to have shootings. These were all set in motion by this one world changing event.
