As Interviewed by Thanh-Mai Nguyen, March 18, 2017
"In refugee camp, basically, you on your own, you are free to do whatever you want to do, but myself, I keep busy by keep learning English, to prepare myself, in the future."

Introductory Profile: About Duong Nguyen
My interviewee’s name is Duong Nguyen and he is my father. Duong was born in Vietnam in the 1960’s and came to the United States in 1990. He had a difficult life in Vietnam taking care of his family as well as himself. Duong came to the United States for a better opportunity like many others. I would describe Duong as gentle, firm to his word, and kind hearted. He is about 5 foot and 5 inches and has graying hair.
In this interview with him, Duong speaks about his experience of when he traveled to the USA. He is very easy going with how he talks, but at a fair amount of time, the topic was a bit sensitive sometimes. Duong talks about his feelings and motives in a calm and distant tone as he remembers his life when he entered a new place, the USA.
I had a interesting time interviewing Duong about his time as a refugee and an immigrant and I can tell it is a lot more difficult to listen to someone say it’s hard than to actually have experienced it. The process of immigration to any place is very difficult emotionally and shouldn’t be taken lightly. It is a very hard, but exciting thing for many people to take such a huge leap and for them, to hope to land on the other side. Hopefully you found Duong’s story as intriguing as I did.
