"Honestly, I hope there isnít a gay community. I hope it's just a community. I hope there is no more need for parades or laws or all those things. We are human beings. "

Introductory Profile: About James G.

James was born in 1968 and grew up in Stuart, Florida. James came out as a young gay man in the 1980ís when the AIDS epidemic was spreading. It was dangerous for a gay man then because of the publicís fear of AIDS. Gay people experienced both discrimination and violence against them. In 1987, James attended Troy State University in Alabama on a full tuition scholarship until he dropped out because of harassment. He later graduated from University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He currently lives in Austin, TX with his husband.

I met James through my aunt who been a close friend of his for over 20 years. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to interview James recently about social injustice he has endured in his life. I found James to be thoughtful and sincere while he talked about the issues he experienced as a young man. His experiences at times were both shocking and sad. He also talked about his life today and what he hopes for the future, ending on a hopeful note. I am grateful to James for sharing his life story with me.
