Introductory Profile: About Cassandra Chang
Cassandra Chang is my mom and was a survivor of the San Francisco Earthquake of 1989. She was born on April 23, 1974 and was in 8th grade when the earthquake happened. She had just moved to the US from Taipei, Taiwan after her brother moved here by himself 3 years before. She was learning English and had to retake 8th grade. She moved to Dallas and then to Austin to attend University of Texas at Austin. She majored in Computer Science.
The San Francisco Earthquake of 1989 was an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 on the Richter Scale. The earthquake caused the collapse of the Bay Bridge’s top deck. Cassandra was in San Jose at the time which is closer to the epicenter. This was the first major earthquake since the earthquake in 1906. This interview talks about her experience in the 1989 earthquake.
