"I would catch glimpses...of these poor people... I thought 'my goodness, that's hard for them' and I felt the need to help."
Introductory Profile: About Gretchen Shartle
Gretchen Shartle is an activist and a philanthropist, who went with one of the first groups of U.S. citizens that came to Nicaragua during the Nicaraguan revolution, on a quest of fact finding. This was in the early 80's, and by the 90's, Gretchen had started a service project compony, and they helped poor people on the Texas-Mexico border build houses. She devoted her life to doing social justice work in Nicaragua and other places, and has met many families that she connected with. She and her faith in god traveled to wherever people needed help.
